"Harry Potter Schoolbooks"
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is decorated with trompe-l'oiel claw-marks. It is presented as Harry Potter's own text book, with his own notes and doodles and some by his friends. Quidditch Through the Ages is in "better condition." As a "library book" it carries the Hogwarts librarian's threats against those who would deface it. You can read on the "library card" which of the students has already checked it out. Buy two of each; one to keep, one to pass along. It's for the children!
Unless you plan to buy both the UK and USA versions, I definitely recommend the American books. The Bloomsbury paperbacks are smaller than their Scholastic counterparts, and the print is so close to the binding that one almost has to break the binding in order to read it. I'm sorry to say that both have been printed on cheap paper. They are clever and delightful, but clearly meant to be read and passed on. Let's hope they'll come out with collectors' editions - leather-bound, large-print, on acid-free paper, with lots of diagrams, maps, and full-color illustrations, please.

The UK version of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire(hardback) has a magnificent illustration by Giles Greenfield which is reproduced on both the dust jacket and the front cover. There's another picture, an interior scene at Hogwarts, on the back of the dust jacket. Clearly Giles Greenfield has been there! The inside of the book is disappointingly devoid of illustrations, apart from a line drawing of Hogwarts' Coat of Arms. The text has minor variations of interest to Anglophiles. I'm having fun finding them!
